Nuclear new build and decommissioning sites demand BPSS as standard, with CTC or SC layered on for higher-access roles.

A pre-employment check confirms that a candidate is who they say they are and is legally cleared for the role before they start. It typically covers identity, Right to Work, and criminal record checks, with further vetting layered on by sector.
BPSS (Baseline Personnel Security Standard) clearance is a UK government standard used to verify the identity, right to work, criminal record (basic DBS), and employment history of individuals working in sensitive or secure roles. It is often the entry point for many regulated and high-security roles in the critical infrastructure sector.
Jobs on UK nuclear sites usually require BPSS as a baseline, with higher clearances such as Counter Terrorist Check or Security Check depending on the role and level of access. Sites like Hinkley Point C and Sizewell C apply strict screening to meet government and industry standards.
Rail roles typically require Right to Work, identity verification, employment history checks, and criminal record checks through the DBS. For safety-critical roles, additional medical assessments and industry-specific checks may also apply.
It depends on the checks involved and how responsive candidates and referees are. Our advisor-led process has cut screening from around eight weeks to roughly eight days on average, helping you avoid project delays. More detailed employment screening services, such as verifying work history, qualifications, or international records, can take longer.
Most checks look back 3-7 years, depending on the type of data and the role. Criminal record checks usually cover the past 5-7 years, while employment and education history are often verified back to a candidate’s earliest relevant experience, typically from age 18 onwards. For regulated sectors, such as nuclear or financial services, background screening solutions may include more in-depth checks going back further.
