Training and Up-Skilling

In sectors like energy, nuclear, rail and construction, the right certification can be the only thing standing between you and a role you're ready for in every other way. We built Train to Deploy to close that gap. Instead of leaving you to find and fund training on your own, we identify what's missing, put the right pathway in place, and support you through it - into a real job, not just a qualification.

Training with a purpose

Why train and upskill through Rullion

The difference between Train to Deploy and sourcing your own course is where we start. We start with our clients' hiring needs, not a generic curriculum. We work with employers across our sectors to understand the roles they need to fill now and over the coming months, then identify candidates with the right aptitude and transferable skills to fill them - even if a certification or technical skill is still missing.

That means every pathway is tied to genuine demand. We're not training people and hoping a job turns up afterwards; the training exists because a role does. A few things that come with it include:

Every pathway is linked to live roles or workforce demand we've already identified with a client.

Before training starts, we assess your aptitude and behaviours against the client's and role's needs, so the pathway you're offered is one you're genuinely suited to - not just the next one available.

We work with established training partners including NTAR, City & Guilds and The Knowledge Academy, so pathways can move quickly rather than starting from scratch each time.

Training is typically funded by Rullion as part of the workforce solution we've agreed with the client, and we'll explore government-funded routes, such as apprenticeships, through our training partners where they apply.

You're not booked onto a course and left to get on with it. Our team is with you from the point you're identified, through training, into your placement and beyond.

Training that's built around the role, not the sector

How Train to Deploy works

Most of what we teach isn't sector-specific. Health and safety, COSHH, manual handling and first aid apply just as much on a rail contract as they do on an energy one, and the core skills for roles like Project Planner or Engineer - Excel, planning principles, Primavera P6 - stay largely the same wherever you're heading. So rather than a fixed course list, we build a pathway around you: the core skills first, then any sector- or client-specific training layered on top.

Pathways vary in length and depth depending on the gap we're bridging:

  • Short courses, from a few hours to a few days - typically compliance training, health and safety, mandatory certifications or a technical refresher where a small skills gap is holding you back from starting.
  • Longer pathways, running several weeks up to six months, for a full career transition or the technical depth a more specialist role needs.

Not every pathway ends in a formal qualification. Sometimes it's about becoming job-ready with the practical skills a role needs; other times you'll come away with an industry-recognised certification.

Sector-specific layers

Once the core pathway is in place, we add what's specific to your sector and client. A few examples include:

Do I need the certification before I start?

It depends on the client and the role. Sometimes a certification or technical training is a minimum requirement before you can begin. In other cases, clients are happy for you to join with your core skills in place and complete further training once you're in the role. We work with you and our training partners to find the right route - before deployment, during your placement, or a mix of both.

From transferable skills to a new career

Changing careers doesn't mean starting again. Experience gained in another sector, profession or environment can give you skills that employers value - even if you don't yet have the specific qualification or technical training the role requires.

One Train to Deploy candidate made that transition after leaving the military and moving into a Rail Technician role with Siemens Mobility. His Forces experience had already developed qualities such as teamwork, reliability, attention to detail, structure and practical engineering skills. The Train to Deploy pathway helped translate that experience into the additional skills needed for a civilian rail environment.

Siemens Mobility Limited-Transport-Master

He described the move as one of the most fulfilling steps in his civilian career, highlighting the familiar sense of purpose and teamwork, the safety-focused environment and the opportunity to apply mechanical, electrical and engineering experience to advanced rail systems.

That is what Train to Deploy is designed to do: help you recognise the value of the skills you already have, understand where they could transfer and close the specific gaps between your current experience and a new career.

Train to Deploy is continuing to grow across our markets. Everyone who has completed a pathway so far has moved into a live role, and as more candidates and cohorts complete their training, we'll continue to share their experiences here.

Training and up-skilling FAQs

Generally, no - the training itself doesn't change your day rate, and you won't be charged for it; the cost sits within the workforce solution we've agreed with the client. What it does change is the roles you become eligible for. If you're moving into a new profession through Train to Deploy, you'll typically start at the more junior end of the pay band, reflecting your experience level rather than the training itself, with room to progress as you build experience in the role.

In most cases, no. Training is usually arranged or funded by Rullion as part of the workforce solution agreed with the client. Where external funding routes exist, such as apprenticeships, there may be additional eligibility criteria - these are more likely to apply if you're already working with us as an employee or contractor.

There's no single set of rules - eligibility depends on the training itself, the funding route and the client's requirements. We start by assessing whether you have the core skills and behaviours for the role, then identify what training would close the gap.

Through your Rullion consultant, or by registering your interest in a Train to Deploy opportunity below. We'll assess your transferable skills and behaviours and recommend a pathway based on current client demand; you don't need to work out the right course yourself.

Our Train to Deploy team supports you throughout - coordinating your training, staying in regular contact, and answering questions as they arise, from your first conversation with us through placement and beyond.
