Role Information

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced Works Manager to join a major civil engineering project in Workington. This key leadership role will be responsible for the safe, efficient, and successful delivery of site operations, ensuring works are completed on time, within budget, and to the highest quality standards.

Working closely with the Project Manager and wider project team, you will lead site-based construction activities, drive performance, and foster a strong safety culture across the project. This position offers the opportunity to play a pivotal role in the delivery of significant infrastructure and civil engineering works while managing multidisciplinary teams and subcontractors.

Key Responsibilities

Site & Project Delivery

  • Take overall responsibility for the delivery and performance of site operations on a major civil engineering project.
  • Ensure works are completed safely, on programme, within budget, and in accordance with contractual requirements.
  • Collaborate with the Site Management Team to develop work programmes, construction methodologies, and resource plans.
  • Lead and coordinate site teams and subcontractors to achieve production targets and project objectives.
  • Monitor progress and proactively address issues that may impact delivery.

Health, Safety, Environment & Quality

  • Promote and maintain the highest standards of Health, Safety, Environmental and Quality performance across the project.
  • Ensure all personnel are briefed on safe systems of work through Toolbox Talks, Task Briefings, and Method Statements.
  • Conduct regular site inspections and audits to ensure compliance with Codes of Practice, risk assessments, and company procedures.
  • Work with the Project Manager and HSQE team to develop and implement the Project IMS Plan.
  • Lead the investigation of accidents, incidents, close calls, and unsafe conditions, ensuring corrective actions are implemented.

Commercial & Contract Management

  • Manage, coordinate, and oversee the delivery, storage, maintenance, and utilisation of materials, plant, and equipment.
  • Support the Project Manager in managing client-directed changes and variations to the works.
  • Ensure site operations are delivered in line with contractual obligations and commercial objectives.
  • Assist in identifying efficiencies and opportunities to improve project performance.

Team Leadership & Stakeholder Management

  • Direct, coach, mentor, and support site teams to achieve high levels of performance.
  • Work collaboratively with project stakeholders, clients, subcontractors, and internal departments.
  • Attend and contribute to regular project meetings and progress reviews.
  • Promote a positive team culture focused on safety, quality, and continuous improvement.

Assurance, Administration & Reporting

  • Support the maintenance, auditing, and updating of project management plans and documentation.
  • Utilise project document control systems and ensure accurate record keeping.
  • Contribute to lessons learned and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Monitor, document, and report project progress in accordance with company procedures.
  • Assist the Engineering Manager in compiling handover and completion documentation.

Qualifications/Experience Required

  • Proven experience in a Works Manager, Site Manager, or similar leadership role within civil engineering or major infrastructure projects.
  • Strong understanding of construction methodologies, site operations, and project delivery.
  • Experience managing subcontractors, site teams, and multidisciplinary workforces.
  • Excellent knowledge of Health, Safety, Environmental and Quality requirements within construction environments.
  • Experience working on major civil engineering, infrastructure, utilities, or industrial projects.
  • Strong organisational, communication, and leadership skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities while maintaining focus on safety, quality, and programme delivery.
