Engineering Manager - must have a civils background
Location: Workington
Contract Duration: Permanent
Working Pattern: Monday - Friday, 40 hours per week
Working Arrangement: Full-time, onsite - car allowance included
Role Overview
Lead engineering across projects, supporting both work-winning and delivery teams:
- Manage the engineering function and assess team competence.
- Support feasibility studies, option selection, and risk reduction.
- Embed HSEQ in all design stages and decisions.
- Deliver projects to scope, budget, and company objectives.
- Promote innovation, value engineering, and alternative designs.
- Recruit, develop, and retain engineering talent.
Key Responsibilities
- Ensure teams follow established processes and procedures.
- Lead assurance for design, construction, commissioning, and handover.
- Act as CDM Principal Designer.
- Advise sector leaders, clients, and support bids/submissions.
- Line manage design managers and manage staff rotation for development.
- Maintain safety, quality, and environmental standards; challenge poor practice.
- Apply latest engineering methods and technology.
- Implement lessons learned to improve design, procedures, quality, sustainability, and social value.
- Represent the company externally to clients, consultants, and stakeholders.
- Support recruitment and professional development of engineers.
- Contribute to collaborative initiatives such as Project 13.
Required Skills & Experience
- Degree in infrastructure engineering or related discipline.
- Incorporated Engineer (Civil or equivalent).
- 3+ years in similar roles with Tier 1/2 contractors, with substantial construction/design experience.
- Knowledge of Conditions of Contract and project-specific clauses.
- Familiarity with client engineering policies, approvals, gated processes, site licence conditions, and platforms.
- Ability to deputise for Project Manager and perform Principal Designer duties
