Overview

This is a hands-on engineering role focused on designing and building instrumentation and data acquisition systems that support advanced fusion research and complex engineering environments.

You will work across electronics, measurement systems, and laboratory-based testing, developing solutions ranging from PCB design and electrical wiring through to sensor integration, system commissioning, and data acquisition.

This is an excellent opportunity to join a growing engineering team in a newly created role offering broad technical exposure and ownership across complete systems.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and develop instrumentation and data acquisition systems for monitoring and controlling engineering systems.
  • Produce electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and PCB designs.
  • Assemble, test, and commission laboratory-based test systems.
  • Install and integrate sensors, including temperature, resistance, and other measurement devices.
  • Work closely with engineers and scientists to design and deliver test facilities and experimental systems.
  • Collaborate with external suppliers and technical partners on instrumentation and electronics development.
  • Define software requirements and support the development of control and data acquisition systems.
  • Analyse test data and prepare clear technical documentation and reports.

Essential Experience & Skills

  • Degree or equivalent experience in Electronics, Electrical Engineering, Physics, or a related discipline.
  • Experience working with instrumentation and data acquisition hardware.
  • Strong understanding of measurement principles, including accuracy, precision, sensitivity, and uncertainty.
  • Experience designing electrical schematics and PCBs.
  • Hands-on experience working in laboratory, testing, or experimental environments.
  • Good understanding of electronic components used within instrumentation and measurement systems.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively within multidisciplinary engineering teams.

Desirable

  • Experience designing custom data acquisition PCBs.
  • Experience working in research and development (R&D) or experimental engineering environments.
  • Familiarity with cryogenic systems or high magnetic field applications.
  • Experience with PXI, CompactRIO (cRIO), or similar modular data acquisition platforms.
  • Exposure to embedded systems, FPGA development, or programming languages such as C/C++ or LabVIEW.
