Overview

We are looking for a Mechanical Technician to join a Technical Engineering team supporting a wide range of cutting-edge projects within the fusion sector.

We're looking for well-rounded, hands-on technicians who enjoy variety and problem-solving rather than repetitive production work. This is a practical role where no two days are the same, working across multiple systems and engineering projects to support the build, installation, maintenance, and upgrade of advanced experimental equipment.

You'll work closely with engineers, scientists, and fellow technicians in a collaborative technical environment developing next-generation fusion technologies.

Key Responsibilities

  • Carry out mechanical assembly, installation, and integration of engineering systems.
  • Support maintenance, upgrades, inspections, and fault-finding across a range of equipment.
  • Work from engineering drawings and technical documentation.
  • Provide general mechanical engineering support across multiple projects.
  • Collaborate with engineers, scientists, and other technical personnel.
  • Maintain safe working practices and comply with health and safety procedures.
  • Take ownership of work areas, tools, and equipment quality standards.

Essential Experience & Skills

  • Apprenticeship-trained mechanical technician or equivalent practical experience.
  • Experience in mechanical fitting, repair, servicing, or maintenance.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings.
  • Flexible, proactive, and able to adapt to changing priorities.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
  • Good understanding of health and safety practices.
  • Comfortable working in a practical, hands-on engineering environment.

Desirable

  • Maintenance or multi-skilled engineering background.
  • Experience in research and development (R&D), scientific, or highly regulated engineering environments.
  • Exposure to vacuum systems, cryogenic equipment, or precision engineering.
