Project Manager - Rail Vehicle / Rolling Stock Overhaul

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced Project Manager to join a leading rail engineering and maintenance organisation based in Cardiff.

The business specialises in the overhaul, refurbishment, heavy maintenance and modification of rail vehicles and components, supporting a significant proportion of the UK's passenger rail fleet. This role offers the opportunity to take ownership of complex rolling stock overhaul and heavy maintenance projects, working with major rail operators, asset owners and engineering teams to deliver high-quality outcomes.

The Role

Reporting to the Head of Production, you will be responsible for the mobilisation, planning and end-to-end delivery of rail vehicle overhaul and heavy maintenance projects.

You will ensure projects are delivered safely, compliantly, on schedule and within budget, whilst maintaining the highest standards of quality and customer satisfaction. Acting as the primary point of contact for customers and key stakeholders, you will oversee the full project lifecycle from contract mobilisation through to successful completion.

Key Responsibilities

Project Delivery

  • Lead the planning, mobilisation and delivery of rolling stock overhaul and heavy maintenance programmes.
  • Develop project schedules, resource plans and delivery strategies.
  • Ensure projects are delivered safely, on time, within budget and to agreed quality standards.
  • Monitor progress and implement corrective actions where required.

Commercial & Financial Management

  • Manage project budgets, forecasts and financial performance.
  • Track costs, margins, risks and opportunities throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Support change control processes and commercial decision-making.
  • Contribute to tendering and bid activities where required.

Stakeholder Management

  • Act as the main customer interface throughout project delivery.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with train operators, asset owners, suppliers and internal teams.
  • Facilitate regular project reviews and provide clear progress reporting.

Safety, Compliance & Governance

  • Promote a strong safety culture across all project activities.
  • Ensure compliance with health, safety, environmental and quality standards.
  • Identify and manage project risks, escalating issues appropriately.
  • Support robust project governance and reporting processes.

Continuous Improvement

  • Drive operational improvements and efficiencies across project delivery.
  • Capture lessons learned and implement best practice.
  • Support workforce planning and ensure appropriate competencies are available to meet project requirements.

About You

The successful candidate will have:

  • Proven project management experience within rail, engineering, manufacturing or another safety-critical industry.
  • Experience delivering maintenance, overhaul, refurbishment or engineering projects.
  • A degree in Engineering or a related discipline, or a recognised project management qualification such as PRINCE2 or equivalent.
  • Strong project planning, scheduling and cost-control capabilities.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.
  • Commercial awareness and the ability to balance customer, operational and business requirements.
  • The ability to work effectively with multidisciplinary teams in a fast-paced operational environment.
