Position: Principal Mechanical Engineer
Location: Warrington or Abingdon (flexible with location)
Start Date: ASAP
Hours: 37 hours per week, Monday - Friday
Hybrid: 3 days in the office and 2 days home working
Mechanical Engineer - Nuclear Projects
The Mechanical Engineer will work within multi-disciplinary engineering teams delivering projects across different lifecycle stages, from FEED through to detailed design, commissioning, and operational support within regulated nuclear environments.
You will be involved in mechanical design and technical studies, supporting a range of systems including handling equipment, mechanical transfer systems, and process equipment used in high-active or controlled environments. Work will also include design development, technical documentation, and support across construction, commissioning, operations, and decommissioning phases.
Key Responsibilities
Deliver and manage mechanical engineering studies and design work
Produce and review technical outputs such as calculations, specifications, flow diagrams, P&IDs, layouts, and substantiation notes
Support design development from concept through to detailed design and commissioning
Contribute to mechanical handling and process system design (including powder and transfer systems in controlled environments)
Review supplier documentation and technical submissions
Liaise with internal teams and technical specialists across disciplines
Support engineering input across operations, maintenance, and decommissioning activities
Requirements
Degree in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline
8+ years' experience as a Mechanical Engineer
Experience delivering mechanical design within nuclear or other highly regulated environments
Strong understanding of design lifecycle (FEED, detailed design, specification, and delivery)
Experience with mechanical handling or process systems desirable
Experience working on Sellafield or Magnox projects beneficial
Membership of a professional engineering body desirable
Additional
Strong communication skills and ability to work with internal and external stakeholders
Ability to manage workload and meet deadlines independently
Interest in supporting and mentoring junior engineers
Must be eligible to work in the UK and willing to undergo security clearance
