The Project Management Office provides the stable of Programme Managers, Project Managers and Assistant Project Managers taking the majority of projects forward for the organisation, as well as project planning, costing and process governance.

The job holder will provide co-ordination and support to one or more projects and programmes, ensuring procedures are followed and that all key project documents are in place and that projects are delivered to budget, schedule and quality standards

These projects and programmes are varied and typically involve the maintenance and enhancement of the two world class fusion devices on site as well as developing new facilities that advance enabling technologies for the international market in fusion development. These projects and programmes embody our mission to develop nuclear fusion as a source of energy generation, demonstrating the technology with a view to it ultimately becoming commercialised.

Accountabilities:

The Assistant Project Manager works closely with Project Managers and Programme Managers on variety of projects ensuring that they are executed to a high standard according to established project and engineering management processes, leading to delivered solutions of an engineering integrity commensurate with nuclear operations.

The main responsibilities of the role are:

  • Responsible for project managing small projects or work packages with a degree of independence and accountability
  • Ensuring that projects are proactively tracked and managed in terms of progress and in line with the corporate Gateway system (IDP)
  • Engaging effectively with the broader organisation on projects and influence others to get the information and progress required
  • Support the Project Manager on collaboration with the Project Sponsor to develop a Project Management Plan that defines how the project will be delivered
  • Accountable for project documentation and the project lifecycle in compliance with the Quality Assurance requirements
  • Accountable for keeping project databases and records
  • To be a local information manager for the assigned project(s)
  • Analysing the Project Data and reporting the progress against milestones, changes, exceptions, budgets and other key performance indicators
  • Ensure the tracking and timely close out of project actions
  • Ensuring that project risks and opportunities are managed
  • Support the broader project team, to ensure project success
  • Provide programme support to Programme Managers as required
  • Deputise on management of large projects

Budget Responsibility:

* Typical project expenditure up to £0.5M/year

Specific Qualifications/Experience:

Essential

* A degree in a relevant engineering or nuclear field, or equivalent knowledge, such as may be gained through three or more years' experience of project work in engineering or nuclear projects

* IT literate, fluent in Microsoft Office, including Excel and PowerPoint

* Excellent report/minutes writing skills

* Excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to influence stakeholders at all levels of the business

* Good planning and organisational skills

* Be able to work autonomously, with initiative and minimum supervision

* Experience of working within quality management or systems

Desirable

* Experience of managing the interfaces and interdependencies for engineering projects

* Project Management qualifications

* Experience of purchasing systems and contract management

Other Duties:

* Be flexible and able to work across several projects and in several different teams

* Occasional travel within the UK may be requested as part of this role
