To provide professional Systems Engineering services across the STEP programme and in collaboration with our partners.

The post holder will be an effective Systems Engineer for a range of projects for the STEP programme. The scope of these projects will span from long term development of new facilities to short term intensive engineering projects. They will be concerned with the development and management of the design and realisation of complex systems and must be able to demonstrate an ability to deal with ambiguity and the application of systems engineering to emergent technologies.

They will support the development and implementation of policy and guidance on best practice, as well as producing technical reports and ensuring adherence to accepted standards, through their own work and peer reviewing the work of others.

They are typically responsible for the formulation, implementation and often management of systems engineering tools, processes and data that govern the technical work of system development. Both using conventional and Model Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) tools. Typical key areas include requirements capture and management, system architecture development, Functional Analysis, concept generation and evaluation, interface identification and management, subsystem procurement, system verification and technical risk evaluation.

The role will support continuous improvement activities and provide technical mentorship and coaching to more junior members of the team and project team members to ensure a healthy talent pipeline and increasing systems thinking skills.


Accountability 1: Provide Systems Engineering Capability
* Lead and manage the technical development of a system throughout the project lifecycle;
* Research, elicit, capture, develop and manage requirements;
* Define and manage verification and validation activities;
* Define and manage interfaces;
* Develop and maintain the functional and physical architectures / definitions of systems using MBSE
* Collaboration with external partners as required
* Provide systems engineering advice and guidance where required


Accountability 2: Support Engineering Delivery
* Ensure the delivery of assured products and services;
* Implement Model Based Systems Engineering techniques;
* Conduct trade-off analysis and optioneering studies;
* Conduct analysis activities to improve system performance and safety
* Identify, manage and mitigate technical risk;
* Provide input and guidance to decision-making activities;
* Produce technical reports and provide analysis and evidence to support and supplement all activities.


Accountability 3: Support Systems Engineering Team
* Promote the value and benefits of systems engineering;
* Support change management initiatives;
* Keep abreast of developments, innovation and best practice in systems engineering;
* Provide training, coaching and mentoring;
* Support the continuous improvement of systems engineering processes and toolsets.

What skills and experience you'll bring to us
Essential:

  • A relevant degree in a recognised STEM subject;
    * Extensive Knowledge and experience in the application of Systems Engineering;
    * Ability to grasp engineering concepts and explore wider implications;
    * Experience of working in multi-disciplinary teams, developing complex systems.
    * Excellent communication and problem-solving skills;
    * Professional registration as Chartered Engineer with recognized engineering institution (e.g. IET, IMechE etc.)
    * Membership/Accreditation with INCOSE.
    * Experience in using 3DS tools
    * Experience working in MBSE environments.
