Lewis Kyriacou, Recruitment Consultant: “I’m training my public speaking skills at Toastmasters International”

Lewis Kyriacou is a Recruitment Consultant that has been with Rullion for four years. As part of the London rail team, he focusses on placing procurement professionals into new roles in the UK rail sector. With High Speed 2 only just starting and Control Period 6 kicking off next year, it's a vibrant time to be recruiting for the rail industry! Lewis is part of Toastmasters International, where he develops his public speaking and leaderships skills.

Tell us about what it is that you're doing?

"In June 2017, I joined a non-profit organization called Toastmasters International. They provide a mutually supportive learning environment where every member can develop their oral communication and leadership skills. I attend meetings on the second, fourth and fifth Wednesdays of the month and take part in a variety of speaking roles when attending".

"Toastmasters runs four different types of Competition: Humorous Speech, Table Topics (Impromptu Speaking), Evaluation Contest and the International Speech Contest. In 2017, I came 2nd at Club for the Humorous Speech Contest and 3rd in Table Topics at Area Level. This year, I was Club and Area Champion of the Speech Evaluation Contest; making it to Division level of competition in less than a year of being a member of Toastmasters".

Why are you doing it?

"I decided to join Toastmasters last year because public speaking is my passion. When I was at High School, I competed in public speaking to quite a high level and lead five different teams to victory over 6 years; it was my version of sport! Up until last year, I hadn’t competed since 2009 and I felt the need to return to my passion".

What impact is your action having on others?

"At Toastmasters, you meet people from so many different walks of life and it’s great to see them grow in confidence on stage every time they speak. It’s always great opportunity to network – when I was a guest at another club, there was another guest in attendance who works at London Underground... what a place to meet a client!".

What are you doing next?

"I aim to compete in the International Speech Contest in 2019 as well as all the other competitions I have already participated in. My aim is to reach the final of the International Speech Contest and hopefully one day, become World Champion of Public Speaking".

What do you find exciting about working for Rullion?

"I have seen a lot changes at Rullion but they have managed to keep hold of their values. I really believe in the principle of ‘People are Priceless’ and I have seen that demonstrated within Rullion over the years".
