Are you a Project Manager looking for a new challenge?


The Joint European Torus (JET) is the largest fusion machine built to date. After 40 years of fusion science, it finished operating in December 2023. The JET Decommissioning and Repurposing (JDR) Programme now holds responsibility for the facility. The sample retrieval project sits within this transition period from JET Operations to decommissioning and will enable benefits realisation of JET science operations, as well as the underpinning of requirements for the programme's waste handling facilties.

The Sample Retrieval project exists to enable and manage the removal of components from inside the JET tokamak and process them into material samples for analysis by UKAEA and external stakeholders. Whilst component removal from JET has been carried out before, the components are activated and tritiated following DTE3. Therefore, this project also concerns the facility upgrades required to minimise operator dose and tritium emissions.

The project contains ~10 work packages of varying sizes and complexities. There is a core team of ~8 full time resources on the project, plus another ~10 full-time equivalent resources matrixed in at different percentage allocations (~30 resources booking to the project each month).

The role requires a minimum of 3 days / week on the Culham site.

Qualifications Required: * Professional Project Management qualification
* Chartered status in relevant STEM discipline (non-compulsory)



Experience Required: * A minimum of 5 years project management experience
* Experience of leading large teams, ideally of a team working in a matrix
* Track record of delivering complex engineering projects to budget, time and cost
* Passion for ensuring good project management practices and culture
* A pro-active approach to safety, with good appreciation of CDM
* Strong commercial awareness. In particular, awareness of govt. procurement processes.
* Good background knowledge of fusion industry, technology and engineering
* Excellent communication, influencing, and collaboration skills
* Experience of schedule management (P6 experience)
* Experience of risk management
