Job Description

Fusion Futures LIBRTI ('lithium breeding tritium') Communications and Engagement Lead

Background:

Fusion energy promises to be a safe, low carbon and sustainable part of the world's future energy supply. The UK Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA) is the UK's national fusion research organisation, headquartered at Culham Campus in Oxfordshire with other sites in South Yorkshire, Nottinghamshire and Cumbria.

UKAEA has a multi-million Fusion Futures programme, which is the UK's alternative programme to associating to Euratom R&D. This programme allows the UK to speed up fusion energy development through major investment in new R&D facilities, industrial capability and skills.

A key aspect of Fusion Futures is LIBRTI ('lithium breeding tritium'), a sub-programme that aims to lay the groundwork for fusion powerplant-scale tritium breeding. Its goal is to demonstrate that tritium (one of the key fusion fuels) can be bred from lithium, with the process being quantitatively predicted and accurately replicated.

Fusion Futures also seeks to promote world-leading innovation while boosting general industry capacity through international collaboration and the development of future commercial fusion powerplants.

We are looking for an experienced communications specialist to devise, develop and deliver the PR and stakeholder engagement plan for Fusion Futures' LIBRTI.

The role will also encompass external and internal communications for the Materials Division of UKAEA. The Materials division provides a range of key capabilities and expertise which focus on the development of materials for fusion and other related sectors. It also operates our world-leading Materials Research Facility, located at Culham.

The work will involve communications across UKAEA's range of channels, including marketing, digital and print media, social media, events, and internal communications.

The successful candidate will work with the Fusion Futures programme and the UKAEA Communications teams. The role will report to the Programme team and the UKAEA's Communications department.

Responsibilities:

  • Devise, develop and deliver the LIBRTI communication plan.
  • Be the go-to technical communications specialist for all materials innovation and development news.
  • Liaise with both internal and external stakeholders on LIBRTI programme progress, plans and opportunities.
  • Work with UKAEA's events team to design and deliver events, such as webinars, supply chain events, and on-site in person conferences.
  • Tailor the LIBRTI programme's communications and messaging for use by internal and external stakeholders.
  • Define, develop and manage any supporting materials for the LIBRTI programme and Materials division, such as presentations, press releases, web copy, newsletters, info packs, briefings, marketing materials, and more.
  • Reporting to the LIBRTI programme board on feedback to shape onward communications direction.
  • Build relationships with senior personnel across UKAEA.

Qualifications and experience:

The successful candidate will be educated to degree level or equivalent, with proven experience in engagement campaigns and communications planning and delivery.

The role requires the candidate to possess excellent leadership skills, writing and interpersonal skills. You will be able to develop content for various internal and external channels such as websites, digital and social media, amongst others, taking technical information and adapting it for our target audiences.

A knowledge of stakeholders in the fusion and nuclear landscape would be considered advantageous but not essential.

You should be able to work to tight deadlines and independently. The Communications, Business Development and International department has a hybrid working policy in place.

Rullion celebrates and supports diversity and is committed to ensuring equal opportunities for both employees and applicants.
