UKAEA has begun a significant new fusion research program named STEP (Spherical Tokamak for Energy Production); with an aim of having the world's first demonstration Nuclear Fusion reactor. As part of this program, there is need for experimental research in the area of radioactive waste treatment, processing and mitigation with the aim of demonstrating Best Available Techniques (BAT) and developing new processes that minimise waste generation and maximise reuse and recycling opportunities.
In your role as a Waste Experimental Researcher, you will support the STEP programme by delivering research to help make Nuclear Fusion a reality. As part of this ground-breaking programme you will research radioactive waste treatment, processing, and mitigation to develop cost effective and environmentally responsible solutions.

In your role you will be accountable for:
* Carrying out experimental programmes/ theoretical studies related to waste generation, including radioactive waste.
* Setting up and conducting experiments on waste with some instances as part of controlled environments.
* Following an established technical control process to construct and commission experimental rigs within UKAEA. Liaising with other departments within the organisation and using their expertise to ensure the process gets the required approval.
* Analysing data from experiments, showing key findings and results using standard Microsoft Office applications e.g. Excel.
* Writing final reports to satisfy stakeholder requirements and presenting the results at relevant venues (conferences, workshops, internal stakeholders).
* Responsible as part of the Waste Innovation and Science Group for aiding delivery of the research plan, in particular the satisfactory completion of specific tasks that have been allocated by the STEP Waste Innovation and Science Manager.

You'll need:
* A STEM Degree or equivalent qualification or proven experience.
* Scientific Research experience
* Lab-based work experience
* Data analysis experience
* Experiment design experience


It would be helpful if you have:
* Nuclear Fusion knowledge
* Radioactive Waste Knowledge
* Foundry experience
