Job DescriptionTo lead design work on major fusion sub-systems, from concept through to detailed design, and to plan and manage projects on enhancement programs and future fusion devices. The role holder is experienced in performing engineering calculations to support design decisions. They may manage projects for system/component repair, replacement or upgrade activities. They produce technical reports and ensure adherence to design standards.
Accountable for leading design work on major fusion sub-systems, from concept through to detailed design on enhancement programs for CCFE's facilities as well as for future fusion devices.
Accountable for engineering aspects relating to all assigned systems / components including repair, replacement or upgrade activities.
Effectively manage a project team of multiple designers and drawing office personnel.
Develop and effectively implement systems for managing design requirements and interfaces, and processes for ensuring satisfactory performance/compliance, and ensure these are adopted by design teams.
Accountable for engineering analyses using classic and numerical methods to support design studies. Ensure that detail designs are appropriately validated (by computation or experiment), working with engineering analysts as necessary, and ensure appropriate adherence to international and fusion-specific design standards.
Plan engineering projects and on-site repair, maintenance and upgrade programs, build project teams and manage work through all phases from specification to handover of equipment.
Deliver projects to the satisfaction of the Customer (internal or external) within the imposed constraints.
Produce technical reports, departmental notes and journal / conference papers where relevant.
Supervise detail design and manufacture; supervise the preparation of technical specifications and tender documentation and lead subsequent tender and contract management. Ensure design and procurement phases implement principles of value engineering and design for manufacture.
Supervise junior engineers and students, providing them with challenging projects, monitoring their progress and providing constructive feedback.
Demonstrate good communication with personnel across the organisation as well as good team working.
Act as a Technical Reference for the organisation in areas of knowledge.
Adhere to, and ensure staff under their supervision Adhere to, Group and organisational management systems.
Lead in raising the standard for Group competences and be proactive in defining new systems or processes that enhance the productivity of the Group or the wider organisation.
The post holder may be required to undertake any other duties that are reasonable and commensurate with this role that may not be specifically referred to in this document.
Responsible for contracts up to a value of ~1M Euro.
Manage the following staff:
- Project teams of up to 10 staff:
- Supervise the training and development of junior group members (L3 and L4).
A relevant engineering degree or equivalent
Ability to perform exploratory design calculations using first principles
Proven capability in engineering analysis and a good working knowledge of engineering materials and their properties
Experience with relevant environmental factors such as vacuum and transient magnetic fields
Good working knowledge of structural and thermal engineering, solid mechanics and engineering materials
Experience with working to design standards (particularly pressure vessel standards)
Leading teams and supervising other staff
Good communication and technical writing skills
Excellent interpersonal skills
