UKAEA is the home to JET (the Joint European Torus) and MAST-U (Mega Amp Spherical Tokamak - Upgrade), with plans to operate both experiments in this year.
You'll join a team of technicians supporting all hardware related aspects of the CODAS data acquisition and electronic systems. You will use your own experience and judgment adapting existing principles as deemed appropriate. The role can be broadly split into two parts:-
providing double shift support of CODAS systems during JET operational phases as well as 24-hour on-call support of critical systems.
providing design, installation, commissioning and maintenance support for all CODAS control and data acquisition and electronic systems as well as new enhancement projects.
In this role, you'll:
Provide electronic engineering support as the nominated ESRO (Electronic Subsystem Responsible Officer) for a given project and the associated work packages.
Take responsibility for the specifying of complete engineering design packages using existing practices.
Recognise when to consult with design engineers on more complex issues.
Check and approve the documentation package for a given design to ensure that it is fit for purpose prior to installation.
Install and commission control & acquisition upgrades by the following of a design package.
Provide technical guidance and support to other team members.
Produce written technical reports and procedural documentation.
Provide rostered double shift support for CODAS hardware systems during JET operational campaigns. (approximately 1 week in 3).
o Provide year-round rostered 24-hour support for critical systems. (approximately 1 week in 6)
o Resolve faults on JET to reduce downtime. This requires the ability to react and solve complex problems using their own initiative.
Record and control the movement of stock using a dedicated Electra database.
Performance testing, evaluating and repairing of electronic modules.
Install and commission site network infrastructure.
Conduct electrical safety testing of equipment and enclosures.
Carry out routine planned maintenance of both cubicles and equipment.
Time served apprenticeship with an HNC/HND qualification in electrical engineering, instrumentation, electronics, or a related discipline.
The following knowledge & experience would be advantageous:
Proven experience of computer-controlled data acquisition, instrumentation and control electronics.
An ability to apply technical expertise to solving problems.
Experience of working as part of a team with an ability to adapt to a variety of requirements and tasks.
