Job DescriptionDo you have a Process or Mechanical Engineering background (possibly gained in chemicals, oil & gas or power generation industries)?
Have you considered working on projects connected with the future of clean sustainable energy?
This is an opportunity to work on conceptual design for the next generation of clean energy production.
Here at UKAEA we are working towards making Fusion energy a reality. You could be part of the next stage in our journey to realise that vision.
In your role you'll lead process design work on major fusion sub-systems, from concept through to detailed design.
You'll have experience in performing engineering calculations to support design decisions with emphasis on Balance of Plant Systems and Cooling systems. You could manage projects for system/component repair, replacement or upgrade activities. You'll produce technical reports and ensure adherence to design standards.
Your responsibilities will include:
Accountability for leading design work on major fusion sub-systems, from concept through to detailed design on enhancement programs for UKAEA's facilities as well as for future fusion devices.
Engineering aspects relating to all assigned systems / components including repair, replacement or upgrade activities.
Effectively manage a project team of multiple engineers, designers and drawing office personnel.
Lead collaboration with systems engineers for managing design requirements and interfaces, and processes for ensuring satisfactory performance/compliance including using analytical tools for Hazard and Risk analysis
Create procedures for the development process designs through the creation of mass and energy balances that support a process flow architecture, leading to Process Flow Diagrams.
Create procedures and support the development of P&IDs and supporting process data sheets for major process equipment
Ensure that detail designs are appropriately validated (by computation or experiment), working with engineering analysts as necessary, and ensure appropriate adherence to international and fusion-specific design standards.
Deliver projects to the satisfaction of the Customer (internal or external) within the imposed constraints.
Produce technical reports, departmental notes and journal / conference papers where relevant.
Supervise detail design and manufacture; supervise the preparation of technical specifications and tender documentation and lead subsequent tender and contract management activities. Ensure design and procurement phases implement principles of value engineering and design for manufacture.
Supervise junior engineers and students, providing them with challenging projects, monitoring their progress and providing constructive feedback.
Please note, the role is only offered on PAYE or Umbrella basis. We are unable to engage with any Limited Company contractors.
All successful applicants must undertake a BPSS clearance (basic security clearance)
