Responsibilities & Duties

Key responsibilities include:

  • Carry out risk assessments and consider how risks could be reduced

  • Review safe operational procedures, to ensure they identify and take into account all relevant hazards.

  • Takes responsibility for implementing best practices and behaviours.

  • Takes responsibility for recording, investigating and ensuring follow-up actions are carried out in a timely manner, for accidents, incidents and near misses.

  • Carry out regular site inspections to check policies and procedures are being properly implemented

  • Keep records of inspection findings and produce reports that suggest improvements

  • Ensure working practices are safe and comply with legislation

  • Lead some in-house training with managers and employees about health and safety issues and risks

  • Keep the hazard and near miss log up to date publishing the statistics monthly.

  • Follow-up incidents, near misses and accidents, ensure actions are followed-up in a timely manner and produce statistics for managers.

  • Keep up to date with new legislation and maintain a working knowledge of all health and safety executive (HSE) legislation and any developments that affect the employer's industry

  • Produce management reports, newsletters and bulletins and programme of Tool Box Talks as required.

  • Make sure occupational health screening is completed where required.

  • Required Skills & Experience

  • Professional qualifications in HSE (Nebosh health and safety practical applications level 3).

  • Proven experience of working within a Company Health, Safety and Environment function.

  • Good written and spoken communication skills in order to explain health and safety processes to a range of people and to give presentations to groups

  • Ability to convince managers of the need to implement and maintain safety standards that may compromise speed or efficiency in the organisation

  • Patience and diplomacy because the profession requires a collaborative approach

  • The ability to understand and analyse complex information and present it simply and accurately

  • A passion for HS&E and improving the safety culture of workplaces.

  • An investigative mind

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office, Excel, Word and PowerPoint.

  • Attention to detail

  • Ability to understand regulations, interpret them and apply them

  • Able to adopt a flexible approach to company requests within your level of responsibility, skill set, training and knowledge.

  • Experience of conducting quality audits.
