This is an excellent opportunity for anyone with modelling/coding background looking to gain experience in Systems Modelling.
Previous experience in a similar role would be highly advantageous however, we will consider applications from graduate level with relevant physics or engineering degree as long as there is strong exposure to coding in any of the commonly used languages (C++ or C# or Python or Fortran etc) and aptitude and willingness to learn through doing! Previous exposure to PROCESS code is not an essential requirement.

The PROCESS systems code is the lead European systems code which is heavily used to design the proposed European demonstration power plant DEMO. It combines a set of simple 0D/1D models of all significant systems of a fusion power plant and a constrained optimisation solver to answer questions like "What is the smallest fusion power plant that provides 500 MW of electricity to the grid?" The PROCESS team wants to expand its work to power plant concepts other than the EUROfusion DEMO design.
The main responsibilities of the role will include:
Contribute to improving PROCESS through the development of new models and supporting tools aimed at improving the usability and scope of PROCESS
Contribute to the documentation/publication of new models and their effect on power plant design
Deliver conceptual designs for fusion power plants with a focus on other designs than the European DEMO concept as well as other fusion experiments
Contribute to investigating the effects on overall design of actual or assumed developments in fusion physics and technology
Interact with experts on specific areas of power plant design as required to support their work with systems integration aspects
Build and maintain international contacts to projects that would benefit from systems modelling design other than the EUROfusion DEMO concept
Win contracts for fusion power plant/experiment design work or leverage contracts for other UKAEA business units
Essential Aptitudes and Experience
A degree OR equivalent experience in physics or a related engineering discipline
A PhD in Physics/related engineering discipline or equivalent work experience
Familiarity with Unix/Linux-type computer systems and programming languages (ideally Fortran, C++ and/or Python)
Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Ability to work in an international environment with multiple objectives
Self-motivated and capable of working in a team
Willingness and ability to travel for short collaborative visits
Work experience in multi-national collaborations and/or within the fusion community
Negotiating and influencing others
