Shape the next generation of motorways
Would you like to join a world-class team and help construct the next generation of Smart Motorway networks that keep Britain moving?
Rullion is proud to be partnering with Balfour Beatty recruiting for several opportunities within the M4 Smart Motorway team.
This is the largest Smart Motorway project in the UK and includes the demolition and rebuild of 11 bridges as well as the installation and build of four new bridge structures that will carry road users over roads, railways and rivers. Smart motorways are a key part of plans to build a road network that's fit for the future, with a record £15 billion investment into improving our roads, reducing congestion and keeping Britain moving.
The M4 carries an average of 130,000 vehicles each day, leading to congestion and unpredictable journey times. The scheme also aims to support the economy and facilitate economic growth in the region within the region, providing much-needed capacity on the M4.

What’s happening within the project?
Balfour Beatty is working in partnership with Highways England to transform the M4 into a smart motorway. Much of the M4 was originally built as a two-lane dual carriageway, therefore we need to do the following to make the changes:
- 11 bridges carrying local traffic over the motorway need demolishing and replacing to make room for a new lane on the M4 where there is no existing hard shoulder
- Bridges that carry the motorway over roads, railways and rivers need widening
- Subways under the motorway need lengthening
