Shape the next generation of motorways
Would you like to join a world-class team and construct the next generation of Smart Motorways?
Rullion is proud to partner with Balfour Beatty to support the recruitment of several opportunities within the M4 Smart Motorway team.
Currently, the M4 carries an average of 130,000 vehicles each day, leading to congestion and unpredictable journey times. Smart Motorways are a key part of plans to build a road network that's fit for the future, with a record £15 billion investment into improving our roads, reducing congestion and keeping Britain moving.
This project is the largest Smart Motorways project in the UK and will include the demolition and rebuild of 11 bridges, the build and installation of 4 new bridge structures, and once complete, will carry users over roads, railways and rivers. The scheme also aims to support the economy and facilitate economic growth in the region.

What’s happening within the project?
Balfour Beatty is working in partnership with Highways England to transform the M4 into a smart motorway. Much of the M4 was originally built as a two-lane dual carriageway, therefore we need to do the following to make the changes:
- 11 bridges carrying local traffic over the motorway need demolishing and replacing to make room for a new lane on the M4 where there is no existing hard shoulder
- Bridges that carry the motorway over roads, railways and rivers need widening
- Subways under the motorway need lengthening
